Random Act of Photos - Eat and be eaten

In my complete ignorance about gardening I had thought the prevalence of snails to be a "healthy" sign.
From what I have read so far they are garden pests, but they are also a vital part of the food chain so poisoning them is a no go.
People pick them out of the garden and then what? Where the hell do you put them all. I have spotted too many to count.
Coffee grounds, egg shells, iron...what have you tried? What has worked? How do you handle these little critters? I know I will eat just about anything, but I won't eat these. So that's out.

I've got snails all over my front yard too. Don't really know if they are doing any damage though...course I use the word yard and not garden intentionally because garden implies planning and design whereas I can't even identify most of what is growing out there and as a result have been afraid to weed until recently! If you find anything out let me know. I wonder if they are only a problem depending on what you want to grow and if that's in conflict with what they want to eat? hmmm I've been looking around on websites but I still don't feel like I have the whole picture.
I went out to weed the yard for the first time this year yesterday (thankfully we have very understanding neighbours) and saw a few here and there. I picked one up and realized it was in the process of having a big poo! yuck! Who knew snails pooed? I guess most everything poos...
Nice pic!

Here's my attempt at writing html...trying to turn that into a link:
The Real Dirty: Reducing your garden-slug population
Kristin! Thanks for looking reading and commenting - I am really glad to get more info about this. Very timely :-)
Put a small dish of beer in the garden. Word will spread that you are throwing a party and the snails will come running, get falling-down drunk and slime off to snail heavon in drunken bliss.
LEJ, I am not sure the beer would make it to the snails.
;-)
